The Daily Photo bio picture
  • Breaking News!!!

Hello and welcome to The Daily Photo, a daily updated photography newspaper dedicated to bringing you cool photography, tutorials, reviews and much more. My name is Dan Rocha and you can check out my work at Online Portfolio. I've been a photographer now for about 6 years, and I work mainly on travel, portfolio and wedding photography.

So more about this website. Well, I designed it as a newspaper as that's exactly what I wanted it to be. A place where you will get a photo a day (sometimes more), tutorials, reviews, what's going on in the photography World and much more. So many photography websites just contain images, or reviews, or tutorials...but rarely all of them. You are welcome to comment, in fact, Id appreciate it.

I also have a Flickr page that you can find a lot of my work. I seem to get a fair amount of feedback on there so feel free to check it out Flickr Page.

Nikon D800……..Ordered :)

Well, I couldnt resist the temptation any longer and have pre-ordered the new Nikon D800. Jessops were good enough to take reservations without taking your money until shipment date, so now I have taken the plunge and put my name on the waiting list. God knows how long I would have had to have waited had I not put my name down.

Now I just have 5 weeks to save £1700! Minus of course my trade in for the old D7000. With that in mind, anyone want to buy a D7000, Nikon 50mm f1.8, and a Hanhel battery grip? All are less than 2 months old.

Let me know if interested.

Moody Editing

Isnt it funny how we always aim for the sharpest possible images, then spend hours editing them to make them soft and blurry. I really like the above image, with the textures brought out in the fabrics and the soft focus around the face and body, only the eyes being sharp.

We took this image on a shoot in our bedroom, some few weeks ago. It wasnt one of the best shots out of the camera, but the editing has made something of it.

The New Nikon D800E

At last it is here, the camera I, and Im sure you, have been waiting for. When the D4 was anounced some days ago, I was somewhat underwhelmed at the improvements over the D3S. For sports photography, its great, but this is the camera I want.

Its a 36.3mp camera that has an attention to detail that no other real Nikon can achieve. Its the largest resolution 35mm camera ever produced and its a statement of intent from Nikon. The detail that this camera will be able to resolve will compete directly with its medium format cousins and blow the competition out of the water.

It wont be available anytime soon, probably within a couple of months – gives me time to save:).

The Bathroom Shoot…

I thought Id put all of the bathroom photos in one place, as they seem to be very popular. There are more to edit – we took about 50 altogether. I will edit these over the coming days but for now, here they all are!

Corfe Castle

This weekend, me and my lovely fiancee Lucz are going to stay down in Corfe Castle, in Dorset. Not actually in the castle of course, it would be freezing, but a little old schoolhouse that we have rented at the foot of it. Its gonna be cold but we cannot wait to have some time to ourselves. Thats right, even the littleun isnt coming – she is at her Grandads!

We may get some photos whilst we are down there, as the camera will be coming with us – but we may not.

Miss Oxfordshire

This was a photo from the first of three photoshoots I did with Miss Ellie Rose Gilbert, Miss Oxfordshire and shortlisted for Miss UK. Not sure if she won, but we did get some good photos of her in our few hours together. I guess if you like corsets, this is the photo for you:).

Blurry is not always bad…

We all talk about taking sharper images and how the resolution of detail is the most important thing. But sometimes, a softly focused image can really work. This image above, I did not intend to be like this but the low light in the room and the bad camera settings I employed make the image soft and blurry. However, I think it works better like this.

Glastonbury Abbey

This was taken on a very, very cold winters day a year or so ago. Myself and my friend had stayed in Glastonbury for the weekend and had managed to take loads of nice photos, but the fog that descended on the Abbey on the Sunday morning was an oppertunity not to be missed. We were lucky that the place was deserted and the view was immense. This is a 5 shot HDR image that is very subtly blended to produce a gradual tone mapped image. I thne put a texture over the top to frame the image.

Body Art and Something Creative…

Being a very creative person, Lucz decided some time ago that we should do some body art photography and try and create something a little different. What we achieved is a few photos similar to the one above, with this one being my personal favourite. Its been edited quite heavily but I think the harshness of the processing adds to the unusual style of photo and although not particularly flattering, it makes it work. Its not a very secy image, more an image that makes you think – still, I really like it.

In work at 4.30am!!!!

It feels almost Third Reich to be in at such an ungodly hour, almost fascist! Anyway, here I am, way before the sun rises and I havent even been to bed yet. My thinking is, the earlier in the week I do my hours, the longer I have to spend with my wonderful family at the weekend. Its hard to tear myself away from them on a Monday morning, but I wanna earn as much money as I can so that we can do all the things we want in life and so that I can make all their dreams come true!

Love them so much x

Bodypart Photography

A lot of the time, a photograph of a bodypart or torso can be incredibly sexy. In fact, when you do not include the persons face as in a traditional portrait, it can add sexiness to the image. Composition is accentuated and the lines and curves of the body dominate more than if the entire person is photographed.

In this photo above, I concentrated on capturing Lucz’s figure, her form, without her eyes dominating the photo as they usually do. When we look at an image, we usually focus on the eyes first and then lead down the image. With a photo like this, we do not have that oppertunity. We have two main focal points here, the breast and the tattoo and we are unsure of what dominates it most. This adds to the composition and allows us free reign over how we view the image, which makes us stare longer.

There will be a tutorial on composition coming soon!

The Great HDR Debate…

People just love HDR these days, with more images of this type being posted than of anything else. There are some out there who think it is almost blasphemous to merge photos of differing exposures, to create a pseudo artistic piece…they refuse to refer to it as photography.

However, HDR does have its place and if done correctly, can create something realistic and detailed – without covering up a poor photograph with a cool effect. Im by no means that good at HDR, there are so many people out there with a real eye for what it is to combine images in HDR. Trey Ratcliff for one, really has set the benchmark for what a lot of people aspire to create.

My only real issue with HDR is that a lot of the time it is overdone to the point of looking painterly. It loses that photographic quality and instead of assisting in showing what our eyes saw at the time, becomes something completely different. Thats why I do not always like HDR images and I think there are people out there who feel the same.

More on Textures…an Sexiness

This is another re-edited photo I have done using a texture, to make it a little more interesting. I think its a nice photo as it is, but the texture just adds a little mystery and a little more intrigue. I love this photo as it is sexy without being too revealing, and Lucz, as always looks incredible!

National Geographic Style

I love using textures, as I have mentioned before, as they can really transform a photo into something different. I have always loved that “Afghan Woman” photo, featured in National Geographic magazine some years ago, and I thought I would try and create something similar – without the context:).

So, here is a re-edited photo of Lucz that I took some months ago, wearing a headscarf and nailing an emotional pose.

Happy Anniversary Lucz!!!!

Ok, so I never got the chance to put this on here over the weekend, due to us celebrating our anniversary down in London. So I just wanted to say happy anniversary to the most amazing woman I have ever met. She is everything I have ever wanted in a person and I love her more and more every day. Ever since the day I met her, I have been in love with her and I know that I will love her til I die. Just being with her, I feel a better person and without her I would be nothing.

It was the day I met her that I realised that I’d never been in love before, and that everything before her was nothing more than pretend. There is so much that I could write about her, it would make a novel – so I will end it here.

She is beautiful, funny, caring, loving and mine – and I couldnt be happier! Here’s to the rest of our life darling…

Waxing Lyrical…

This was one of the best models from our weekend trip to Madam Tussard’s. This could almost pass as the real thing;).

Hitler…

On our family weekend away (well, anniversary), we decided to go to Madam Tussuad’s. After what seemed like endless queuing we were eventually robbed blind on the doors to the tune of £125 and allowed entry to this glorified candle shop. However, once inside, we had a really good time and I have to say, some of the models are incredible. Some are awful and pay scant resemblence to those who they are modelled on, but Lucz and Tinisha has a wonderful time.

This is my personal favourite, Adolf Hitler. By that I mean my favourite photograph, not my favourite person from the exhibition:). I like the way the photo almost seems authentic.

Westminster Bridge

Me and the family paid a visit to London this weekend. It was mine and Lucz’s anniversary so we decided to go and do the usual tourist thing up in the big city. I will post about that later this evening and upload some photos from our visit, but whilst at work I just wanted to post one of my favourite photos from my last visit, just over a year ago.
